| In
his lifetime Boardy played a major part in the development of many who
went on to become top stars of the game. However Keith always had a special
fondness for former England and Great Britain International, Olympian
and Southgate stalwart, John Shaw. With this in mind the Southgate team
was chosen with the mutual respect between John and Keith.
John Shaw Wrote:
“I first met Boardy back in 1979 when I came to play West of England
Under 21 hockey and he was my manager.
Over the years he has helped many young players progress within the game.
I, like many before and after me, have a lot to thank him for. The traditional
values of the game were important to Boardy, whatever level you, as a
player, reached.
On a personal note, Boardy gave me self belief and made me “want
to play for him”. He was a warm hearted man who’s humour and
dignity made him great fun to spend time with.
Over the years, Southgate have been matched with Firebrands on several
occasions, especially in the cup. Whatever the result, the games have
been played with great spirit and passion.”
He signed off his message by referring to the event as “..a special
game for a special man”.
